Story Nine- A Farewell To Lemonade, Part Four

<HollyhockGod> Ah, it's the first witness.

<Benhimself> Every time I see that name, I hear the chorus to the Cats song in my head.

<Benhimself> This probably also happens to Ryan, too.

<HollyhockGod> Can it be really?

  • HollyhockGod prefers "Bustopher Jones."
  • borogove (~zn.oc.artx.maertstej.5970965C-ratScigaM|rednaxelA#zn.oc.artx.maertstej.5970965C-ratScigaM|rednaxelA) has joined #childrenofeve

<borogove> hey people.

<borogove> also, npcs

<Benhimself> I believe it is old borogove!

<HollyhockGod> Well, he's not skin and bones.

<Benhimself> "Tell me, are the allegations true that you have willfully and knowingly defied the Code Fidelitatis not 9, but in fact 99 times?"

<Benhimself> Although it would be fun to take Constant Domain (Lesser Creation): Wives.

<HollyhockGod> It's difficult to say. He's not the Power that he was in his prime.

<Benhimself> Anytime, anywhere, if it would be useful for you for it to do so, a new wife comes into existence.

<HollyhockGod> Add it to the wiki.

<Benhimself> It's just a specific implementation of the gift already in the book, really.

<HollyhockGod> It's still wiki-worthy.

<Benhimself> Not really worth signing up a new account.

<HollyhockGod> You must grow my domain!

<HollyhockGod> You have to add Ryan's character sheet to the Children of Eve section anyway.

<Benhimself> But… signing up takes effort!

<borogove> aren't our character sheets on there already, anyway?

<HollyhockGod> Not on my new and excellent Nobilis wiki.

<HollyhockGod> Currently the only Nobilis fansite in existence as far as I know.

<HollyhockGod> Hm, some of them are up but not linked.

<HollyhockGod> But you gots to update them in any case.

  • HollyhockGod adds the sheet links to the CoE page.

<HollyhockGod> Hm, no Ebba tonight, but Uq should still be coming, I think.

<Benhimself> Unless he saw our ebbalessness and decided 'Oh, of course, no game tonight!' As he's done before, I think.

<borogove> I think we've established a general intent to keep playing in that situation now, though. so hopefully we'll have burn-girl.

<Benhimself> I laughed a lot at an OOC quote from my PbP Nobilis game: "What? You've initiated a plan to destroy the royal line of England and corrupt and annihilate one of the most treasured myths at the same time? And with Mary's strong attachment to London and everything British, you think there might be issues?"

<HollyhockGod> I frequently laugh at things out of our logs.

<HollyhockGod> "Is apple-pie bed American slang for something appalling?"

  • HollyhockGod explains what that is.

<HollyhockGod> "….that's appalling!"

<Benhimself> It really does amaze me sometimes how much of my plot is basically "give the instigators among my PCs enough rope."

<Benhimself> In, like, almost every game I've run.

<HollyhockGod> That is because instigation is fun.

<HollyhockGod> And that is why I wish you lot would instigate more.

<HollyhockGod> I have to murder your colleagues just to get things done!

<Benhimself> Hmmm.

<Benhimself> My problem is that I always end up in logical-brain when playing, so try to stick to rational courses of action.

<Benhimself> In Ryan's case, unsubtle ones, but still.

  • HollyhockGod sees how to set parent pages within the wiki.

<HollyhockGod> How useful!

<borogove> I'm just not very good at instigation. not that I find the medium helps here either, though.

<Benhimself> Also, he doesn't really mind anybody in his familia!

<Benhimself> A game I played a while ago, where I was Cheating, I had an /absurd/ rivalry with one of the other PCs (Dirt).

<Benhimself> To the point where I actually went and nettled him.

<HollyhockGod> I should just convince Nentuaby to come back and play Excrucian Pandora.

<Benhimself> Clearly one of the other PCs needs to decide that my High Summoning is evil which /must be stopped/ or something.

<HollyhockGod> Start thinking about a good way to offend Alexa, is my advice.

<Benhimself> "Promotion of smoking is an offense to the Light! You should be ashamed."

<Benhimself> "Also, you focus entirely too much on Fire's destructive aspects. It's a tool for forge and hearth, and yet you just burn things down!"

<Benhimself> "Tut tut."

<HollyhockGod> <Alexa> "Yeah. Great, huh? I so rock."

<HollyhockGod> Ah, well. Even if nobody comes, I can still finish cross-examining you.

<HollyhockGod> Enter the witness box, Dominus Sherbrig!

<Marley> I shall ask you again. Do you believe the defendant to be capable of murdering the deceased if given a chance?

  • Benhimself is now known as RyanSherbrig

<RyanSherbrig> (Sorry, was grabbing a bit of breakfast)

  • borogove is now known as Fiona

<RyanSherbrig> "Hmmm. In an even fight? No. In the conflict my familia witnessed, Anna proved more than capable of defending herself via her Estate."

<HollyhockGod> My little baby just told his first lie… I'm so proud…

<Marley> You believe the Water's-Regal could not have been surprised so easily by her old foe?

<RyanSherbrig> "Given that her summer home had been heavily warded precisely to avoid said foe, in the absence of excrucian influence, no. In fact, our familia's first assumption upon hearing the news was that one of either Anna or Thorpe had to be a Deceiver's second skin."

<RyanSherbrig> (No, I don't believe she could be surprised, that is)

<RyanSherbrig> (Thorpe really isn't going to like me after this, is she?)

<Marley> Do you accuse the prisoner of being a disguised Excrucian at this time?

<HollyhockGod> She didn't like you before.

<HollyhockGod> So you're probably in the clear.

<RyanSherbrig> (I think that was more Alexa-centric, but fair enough.)

<RyanSherbrig> "No. As I stated earlier, I now believe she was manipulated by Excrucians."

<Marley> "And you present the presence of two Excrucians attacking Lady Thorpe as evidence supporting your claim?"

<Deuteronomy> Objection- this is conjecture!

<Meon> Sustained.

<Marley> My apologies.

<Marley> Do you have any further evidence to support your claim, Dominus Sherbrig?

<RyanSherbrig> "The testimony of an oracular being called forth via High Summoning."

<Marley> Can you present this testimony to the court?

<Deuteronomy> Objection!

<Deuteronomy> The testimony of beings from beyond Creation is already suspect.

<Deuteronomy> Admitting the evidence of creatures bound into alliance by concerned parties is even more ridiculous!

  • Meon drums his fingers.

<Meon> Is it appropriate to allow such a thing? How would you answer, Dominus Sherbrig?

<Fiona> (insert bribe here)

<Fiona> (that was ooc)

<RyanSherbrig> "Didn't Baalhermnon himself appear on the scene due to an Excrucian's testimony? Clearly there's some precedent for taking information from entities native to the Lands Beyond into account."

<RyanSherbrig> "When properly bound, the Watcher in the Abyss has yet to supply me with false information. More than I can say for certain Nobles on our side of the war."

<RyanSherbrig> (VESPER. WANDA.)

<HollyhockGod> "Lord Baalhermon's methods are outside the scope of this Court's interest," Meon states.

<RyanSherbrig> "Fair enough. If the court has any High Summoners, they could observe as I called it forth to ensure I command truthful answers, rather than those that serve my interests."

  • Meon considers.
  • Meon addresses the court at large.

<Meon> Is there an amicus curiae willing to peform the ritual of summoning in Dominus Sherbrig's place? A truly neutral party?

<HollyhockGod> "Ah! Ah!" cries out a voice.

  • Maliq jumps up in her seat.
  • Maliq waves her hand in the air.

<Fiona> (who is Maliq, again?)

<RyanSherbrig> (Was Maliq someone we knew?)

<HollyhockGod> "Ah," says Meon. "Domina Invidiae. You are familiar with the principles necessary to summon this Watcher?"

<HollyhockGod> Maliq Ristani, Power of Envy, who ran Lethe Anonymous through Rosa and the Cammora.

<RyanSherbrig> (Ah.)

<Maliq> I am the best summoner on the Earth, actually.

<Maliq> Anywhere, really.

  • Maliq giggles.
  • RyanSherbrig looks skeptical.

<HollyhockGod> Now that you see her in person, you can really get a good look at her.

<HollyhockGod> Maliq is a young girl, barely out of her teens to see her, with frizzy black hair that hasn't been brushed in weeks.

<HollyhockGod> Her face is covered with strange stains as though some kind of horrible experiment had gone even more horribly wrong.

<HollyhockGod> Imagine what Bellatrix Lestrange looked like during puberty, and you've got Maliq.

<Maliq> But I don't need to borrow secondhand slaves from Sherbrig. I have my own, superior oracle.

<Maliq> I can bring it forth within the hour, if it pleases you, Lord Meon.

<HollyhockGod> Incidentally, you knew from the almanac that Maliq was a Worldbreaker, but you hadn't heard of this skill. Evidently normal attributes just aren't special enough for her!

<HollyhockGod> Meon is amused by this notion.

  • RyanSherbrig is trying very hard to not be upset by what seems an obvious attempt to rile him.
  • RyanSherbrig looks only moderately successful.

<HollyhockGod> "Very well," he rules. "Court is adjourned for the next fifty minutes, until the Domina completes her rituals. Bailiff, bring the Lady whatever materials she may require."

<HollyhockGod> The onlookers file out to get popcorn.

  • Marley strides over to speak to the two of you.

<Marley> So. What do you think of this? Where does that witch come down?

<Fiona> "she wants to show off? and I guess she'll take whatever actions she can to make her oracle look superior to ryan's"

<Marley> But can we trust her beast to give a true answer?

<RyanSherbrig> "I remain skeptical of her claims to greatness, given her estate."

<Marley> She's not a complete screw-up.

<Marley> She's a complete lunatic, but she's not a complete screw-up.

<RyanSherbrig> "Hmm. If she has indeed mastered both the ultimate arts of Alchemy AND High Summoning, then, more power to her."

<Marley> Of course, there's very little that we can do in either case. If she decides it amuses her to signal her monster to condemn Thorpe, we can't stop her.

<ElizabethEliza» Ry- Dominus Sherbrig!

<ElizabethEliza» What is that woman going to do? Do you know? Who is she?

<RyanSherbrig> "We could request a verification of its abilities to discern powers beyond the ability of normal divinations to determine…"

<Marley> That would be inviting her to ask personal questions.

<RyanSherbrig> "True. Perhaps specific questions."

<Fiona> "perhaps we could submit a statement to the court first, then ask her creature to verify it?"

<ElizabethEliza» Meon isn't going to let us make things that easy.

<Fiona> "perhaps that statement could be something we've already asked ryan's mouthy-thing about?"

<Marley> Where has Meon gone, anyway?

<RyanSherbrig> "An excellent question."

  • RyanSherbrig looks around for him.

<HollyhockGod> I think he wander off into the judge's chamber.

<HollyhockGod> The door is not quite shut.

<Fiona> it's presumably a fair assumption that he can hear everything we've said, I assume?

<HollyhockGod> Only if he has really good hearing. Maybe he does and maybe he doesn't.

<RyanSherbrig> "Hmmm. Well, it can't hurt to try. I'll go confer with him."

<HollyhockGod> The chamber is dark.

<HollyhockGod> Only a pale beam of light filters in from above to illuminate Meon in his stone throne.

<HollyhockGod> He lounges there in that snotty way that only really evil people do.

<Meon> Dominus.

<RyanSherbrig> (Hmmm, what would the appropriate title of address be in this case?)

<HollyhockGod> "Lord Meon."

<RyanSherbrig> "Lord Meon."

<Meon> Have you lost your way?
<RyanSherbrig> "Haven't we all? But no, I sought an audience. I find myself… skeptical as to the Domina Invidae's claims regarding her accomplishments as a High Summoner."

<RyanSherbrig> "Naturally, I went out of my way to discover a presentation of information beyond the capabilities of ordinary divinations, as proof of the Watcher's oracular talents."

<RyanSherbrig> (to discover, that should be)

  • RyanSherbrig discreetly places the sheet of blackmail material on the desk.
  • Meon glances at the sheet.

<Meon> Mhm. Mm. Ah-hmmm.

<Meon> She likes Passions, does she. Mm.

<Meon> Not particularly valuable, of course. But it does amuse me to know this.

<Meon> I suppose there's no harm in allowing you each to summon your own beasts.

<Meon> If your stories match, then we have correlation.

<Meon> I doubt there's much chance of collusion between the two of you, mm?

<RyanSherbrig> "Indeed."

  • RyanSherbrig thanks Meon for his time and goes off to do High Summoning mojo.

<HollyhockGod> An hour passes!

<HollyhockGod> Hm, I think this is all I can do for tonight. We've got a few guests over.
