Bonus Story

"You expect me to leave the Chancel?" Kavya said, unhappy with this change of plans. "But what if I die?"

"Well of course, Ms. Rao, you can't simply hide in my home until you are ready to be ennobled." Ma'at the II told her over the VidWindow. "Besides, I must insist you go out there and make some friends before you go insane from the loneliness of being away from your family."

"What is it that you expect me to do?" Kavya asked, exasperated.

"We need to pick up a package sent by someone who owes me a favor for removing Lord Entropy from the Council." Ma'at explained. "If I have to be out there in order to receive it, then you certainly will."

Later that day…
"I am not a babysitter!" Kavya protested.

"And I might be 10-ish, but I sure don't need anyone to look after me!" Gadg8eer pouted.

Even Alexander was unhappy. "Ma'at, I know these two aren't my problem, but I am not leaving the new kid with this traitorous-"

"Enough!" Ma'at II said. "If you morons would listen for one second… This is the one place where Gadg8eer has an ample supply of stories to sleep in. As for you, Kavya, if I needed a babysitter you would know! You seem to be very good at finding out my secrets, after all."

"I still don't trust her." Alexander responded. "Remember the headlines? Jade Dragon Stolen by Real Life Supervillain!?"

"Why do you think I'm leaving her alone… with someone she can't trust?" Ma'at smiled. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need my beauty sleep." she told them, and disappeared behind a shelf.

"How do we get orders then?" Gadg8eer asked.

"Usually a text message or phone call?" Alexander said, shrugging his shoulders. "So… who's your family, again?"

"…they think I'm dead. They have to." Kavya said, saddened.

"I meant Gadg8eer, but… wow. That explains why you're a huge bitch all the time, and I mean that compassionately. Sorry to hear you feel alone."

"Thank you for caring, Mr. Chase…" Kavya said. "What about you two?"

"I had to fake a falling out with my dad to explain why I'm not talking to him." Alexander explained.

"Oliver Kind sort of… died… after Ha-Qadosch Berakha ripped me out of his mind." Gadg8eer told them. "I'm just a daydream of his fictionalized childhood, I don't really know his family!" he said, unhappy.

"He created you and you don't even like him?" Kavya asked. Gadg8eer crossed his arms and didn't answer.

Alexander looked thoughtful for a moment, then spoke. "Writing says he's angry at Oliver and storytellers in general for treating characters like toys."

"I was an author avatar, so I guess I would know all about it, wouldn't I?" Gadg8eer told them, angry at how selfish he'd been. "Can I go exploring, please? I'm bored and don't like talking about my past."

Kavya took a book out of her bag and opened it. "…have either of you wondered if there is a reason Ma'at chose you?"

"Why? It's pretty clear we're the best she could get that wouldn't disrupt the exact estates we own." Alexander stated.

"What if there's another reason?" she asked, and turned a few pages at a time. "Alexander Charger… Alexander Charles… Alexander Chart… Alexander Chase… This book includes the current location and death location of everyone with the name Alexander. According to it, you're here…" Kavya told him, "…and your death is listed as Not Applicable."

"So I'll never die?" Alexander asked. "I'm still mostly mortal, Kavya. I find that a bit hard to believe."

"Not if you find a way to become immortal." Kavya said, and switched for another book. "Oliver Kibbles… Oliver Kick… Oliver Kiharu… Oliver Kilroy… Oliver Kind, right here! Not Applicable, just as I thought."

"Yeah, but that's obvious, you can't kill an idea and I'm an idea with free will." Gadg8eer told her. "There's continuity between me and Oliver! I remember stories like Wander Over Yonder that he really liked, and stories he really hated like Otherland…"

"Why do you hate Otherland?" Alexander asked.

"It's one of those stories where characters aren't even toys, they're just an investment in shock factor!" Gadg8eer complained loudly.

"I should note that down, Writing doesn't like the sound of that…" Alexander said, typing into his phone. "You were saying, Kavya?"

"I've gone through the books here in the Library of Life, and I am not on the list. Neither are any of my family. Neither is your family, Alexander. According to Ma'at, that is only true because we chose to run from our families."

"But… I didn't run away, I was… Is Oliver's family that lucky?" Gadg8eer hoped.

"I believe it's not as simple as luck." Kavya told him, then started speaking quieter. "There are actually a lot of Not Applicable deaths in these books. For one reason or another, almost nobody is going to die. People reincarnate… or go to Hell to be loved… You two need to know, there is something very wrong with Death…"

"What's so bad about not dying?" Gadg8eer asked.

Kavya shushed him, and then spoke quietly. "…please don't tell Ma'at, but I think someone is going to destroy the Estates which enable Death… Judging by one of her prophesies, I am afraid that someone might be us."

"You always knew too much to be good news." Alexander realized. "You know something important about this, don't you, Kavya?"

"She owes me the Estate of Libraries, and owes someone else one favor for each estate she controls." Kavya whispered. "I think my other boss is helping Ma'at, for now. They get along too well. My other boss doesn't want to die, and without ending Death… the odds are she almost certainly will."
